i had to do a double take at a news report the other day (actually, st. patrick's day) - a couple who had been set up in a 'blind marriage' by a local radio station on valentine's day were getting an annulment (a month later). no big surprise there. the thing i couldn't get my head around was why this was being held at a gas station. to celebrate, the gas station was offering free fill ups first thing in the morning so people had been lining the streets since 3 and 4am. is it time to move yet ;-)
here are aly and i in our back yard. i've also just added some photos from a trip to the beach with grammy, and the group shot from our MOMS club luncheon in anaheim.
aly can now read her's and toby's names but thinks the word 'mommy' says mcdonalds. i don't want to know what this shows about our eating habits.
we're still trying to persuade toby to stop shouting 'no way' to everything. he doesn't know many animal sounds but loves to roar so is happy to tell you what a lion/tiger/dinosaur etc. say.
something i forgot to mention before now - i have finally had my hair cut in a major way (thanks to a birthday present from my friends at the moms club). hooray!
the other night on the local news there was another spectacularly stupid report. this was about railroad crossing and was a 'LIVE EVENT'. this live event involved driving an extremely slow train into an empty car on the railroad to show you why it's a bad idea to sneak around barriers or generally sit around on the rail tracks in your car. in fact the most exciting thing that happened in the 'live event' [incidentally we had to watch in excruciating detail while the train dribbled along the tracks for half an hour] was that the camera inside the car fell off upon impact so you couldn't actually see anything. the car was shunted a hundred yards or so and the dummy in the driver's side seemed to escape unhurt as far as we could tell. hmmm.. what a great deterrent that was.
sascha and i were a little outraged that they should have such a lame feature to begin with until they showed footage they had taken earlier that day of people sitting around on rail tracks and walking or driving around barriers which were down. the funniest of all was a huge truck which tried to squeeze under the barrier and failed miserably. he then tried to reverse back out and managed to jam the barrier between his cab and the trailer. fortunately for him there was a railroad official nearby to detangle him. there have been 4 separate non-suicide incidents in southern california in the last 2 months where people have been squished by a train. this has obviously led us to conclude that some people are EXTREMELY stupid.
