sorry about the radio silence there. i nipped off to england! we were going as a surprise for my dad's 60th birthday and are staying through christmas. unfortunately with it being a surprise i couldn't mention anything online!

we flew out on the 16th, joining my mum and dad on their return flight. we told the children they were taking the day off school to wave grammy and grandad off at the airport. we went with them in their taxi and when we got to the check in desk, sascha showed up with the children's bags and suitcases and told them they were going too! they were VERY excited and the flights went really well. I wanted the flights to be a surprise partially so that they didn't let the cat out of the bag with my dad but also because the last flight we went on they were both ill either due to excitement or lack of sleep [probably]. this flight all went remarkably smoothly compared to the last 5 or 6 we've taken anywhere.

aly shouted across the plane in the middle of the flight:
"when we get to england can we go straight to a pub..?"
"kids are allowed in pubs in England you know"
she added!

the jet lag was a killer this time. on the 1st night, my mum and i were cooking a big breakfast at about 6am and on the 3rd night, aly and i met my parents in the living room between 1 and 5am. i think it took about 5 days before we started to feel and sleep normally again.

sascha joined us on friday. he was supposed to arrive on dec 1st, but he got fed up by himself and decided to come early which was lovely. [the christmas rush for video games finishes in about october so this a quiet time of the year for him].

so far we've seen all our relatives for many happy meals, been to several museums and have just come back from a nice long walk around parkgate where my parents live. soon it'll be time for a big Sunday roast dinner. aaaaah it's good to be home :-)

my dad's big birthday party is on the 1st and then we head done to london on the 4th. 5-8th is paris/disneyland and then we're coming back up north on the 9th for an early christmas dinner because my cousin benjamin will be in australia on christmas day.

photos should follow once i've figured out how to connect everything up. it's a miracle i got my ftp and email sorted out within the week.

toby at hockey

well THAT was an interesting day. my parents arrived to great excitment, tickling, chasing, and hiding. unfortunately somewhere in between the chasing and hiding, toby had a major run in with the corner of a wall and we had to take him to the emergency room for repair. they super glued his head together and we were out of there in under 2 hrs. they had a very nice hospital volunteer who spent the whole time running around making sure that everyone in the waiting room had what they needed and getting people updates on their (or their friend's) status. what a great idea. anyway, nice as the volunteer was, i'm hoping i won't have to see her again - i can count on one hand the number of times i've had to visit a hospital emergency room and would love it to stay that way.

in actual fact, i think the wall may have come off worse than toby. there's a bit of re-plastering and painting to do. hard head that kid. toby was really really good. he didn't cry and was fairly matter of fact about the whole thing. he insisted on doing his math practice book in the waiting room, so we knew he was going to be fine. i happened to have bought a little lego x-pod car today which came in very handy while we were waiting for his head to freeze. i might have to carry one of those at all times in case of such an incident.

anyway, not a very entertaining first evening for my parents, but they did come in very handy since they could stay here and put aly to bed. tomorrow i'm off to therapy [a bit of a relapse on the vomit-phobia front, but i'm doing much better now], we're all going to the children's school for their remembrance day assembly, sascha and i have medicals for our life insurance and then hopefully the fun can actually begin.

toby's hockey has been going well. he can now officially skate backwards and stop much better than me [my stopping technique is still to slam in to the boards]. the bag with his hockey gear in it is bigger than toby himself and you can see why...

pumpkin goo
aly's not too keen on pumpkin goo!

halloween all went pretty well. there was a small mishap this morning with me sending the wrong child to school with ingredients for a witches brew but considering we needed to send treats for 5 different parties, i think 4/5 was not too bad.

trick and treating went really well. we all met lots of people we knew and tagged along with them for a while. i can still never believe how many people go trick and treating around here. the roads were literally full of kids and their parents. the good thing about our particular area is that there is a fireworks display ever year at 8.30pm which means trick and treating comes to an abrupt stop around 8pm. this year aly was willing to entertain the idea of going to the fireworks display [she usually hates the noise] so we opted for driving to the edge of the park [already in pjs] and watching the muffled fireworks from under a snuggly blanket. it all worked out very nicely.
