[left] William Sidney [Born: Sidney John Milligan]. Williams was in the army in WWI, but was sailing with the merchant navy by WWII. His love of ailing was very much passed down to his sons. He had an accident during WWII which damaged his sight and resulted in him being discharged. [top right] Elsie Yarnold. Daughter of Fanny and William Yarnold.
Elsie Yarnold's parents both originated in Sussex. She had 3 sisters and 2 brothers: Milly (Mildred), Annie, Fanny, Fred, and William. Milly married George - a railway porter. They had a son, Doug who married Phyllis and had 3 children - Jane, Kenny and Michael. Fanny married a man named George. Fred was a police office and Albert was in the the army. Will was the eldest son. [bottom left] Ronald Sidney. Born March 16, 1921. Updates received by email: hi Peta heres a few images you may not have

Hi Peta, Let me introduce myself. I am your mother's cousin, Linda, the one that emigrated to Canada many years ago. I happened across your site while tracing some members of our family tree. I was very interested to see your scrapbook entries especially the ones pertaining to great Uncle Will. Thought you might be interested in the attached copy of an old photo that belonged to my mother( your grandad's sister). It is a picture of the Yarnold family outside their cottage in Balcombe after they moved from Stoke Poges where all 6 children were born. Elsie had 3 sisters and only 2 brothers [corrected above] . Elsie is the baby sitting on her mother's knee, Annie is in the middle, Mildred by her father. Sitting in the front are, Will, Fred and Fanny. I enjoyed the family reunions Bron and Alan have held when I have visited the UK. Last year I had the pleasure of meeting your sister, Kellie. If you are ever in Toronto please don't hesitate to look us up.
Regards, Hello Peta,I assume you are my cousin Joyce's daughter? My Dad was Martin, the first born to Elsie and Sydney Milligan.Your website is absolutely brilliant, contains so much information and photos of the Milligan's which I have never seen before. My Mum was from Stockport and her and Martin married there in 1947 and lived with my maternal grandparents for a year or so,( I was born in 1948 in Stockport) however we moved to Birkenhead when I was aged two but eventually returned here, I think my Mum was homesick!! However as a family we spent a lot of time visiting Nan Elsie in Birkenhead, hey it was our annual holiday for many years and I loved it.I remember all my cousins,Aunts and Uncles.I stay in touch via email with Linda(Canada) and your Auntie Di,and spent a day last December at Alan and Brons home, apparently your Mum said she wanted to be there,we have not seen each other for many years, but she was visiting you, is that right? By the way my sister-in-law, Sandra, has emailed you,she is as pleased as myself with your site. Love from Lynne Hello Peta, I am your Mum's cousin, Lynne( Martins daughter) we have been in contact previously..Cant recall if I mentioned my interest in family research to you ? Anyhow, its very important to me to find our ancestors, my husband Dave asks why, my reply is why not? The Yarnold side (nan elsie) are sorted, I recognised your remarks about Will, also I have traced the family living in Balcombe in 1901 and beyond. The Milligans...thats the challenge..I think I have traced them..Robert and Ruth Milligan, married in 1848 in Glasgow, Scotland,at some point in time they moved to Liverpool (they are on the 1861 census in Liverpool) one of their sons was also named Robert. I believe he was my great grandfather He married Margaret Parker in 1881 and according to the 1891 census had moved over the water to Birkenhead. The only puzzle is my grandfather his given name was John William but as you are aware he became Sidney John.why I have no idea but as you mentioned there was a mystery surrounding him.The proof that I have traced him is if his birthplace was Birkenhead. However I have searched for both John W and Sidney J in all regions with no success apart from Birkenhead (John William) !! Does Auntie Agnes have any idea where he was born? My Mum cant be sure..Him and grandmother met in Sussex but he was not from there...why he was in that location is another mystery.Well Peta, sorry for boring you with all this old history stuff...I love your website, its so nice to see the photos of your family and yourself... reading about Uncle Ron when he was so poorly brought tears to my eyes.I loved all my relations in Birkenhead...and will always remember them. Also lovely to see the photos of my long lost cousin Joyce, lets hope we can all meet up sometime, love from Lynne
