september, 2003

happy birthday toby. he was 2 on the 6th!

september 27th

hey we lucked out temperature-wise. it seems that while we've been basking in the 80s here, after the driest summer for god knows how long, ventura [california] is overcast and england is positively frosty so i'll be here feeling smug until the rain starts and doesn't stop again until next summer :-)

hooray, my mum and dad have finally arrived. it seems like it's been a long long wait - perhaps because i don't have kellie around any more and i'm missing all my venturian friends. they didn't get in until nearly 6pm and were obviously pretty tired that first night but they held up well today so we spent a few hours in steveston fishing village which is where this photo was taken and then went down to the river to watch the sunset after naptime [naptime for the children and grandparents].

aly, toby and grandad

tomorrow the world's our oyster...!

sascha is due home in a couple of days and kellie arrives on my birthday so it'll be good to see them both. the latest kellie update... she's found out she's also got a fracture in her back. however she's able to walk a little now without her crutches and is back at work. they've had to move her to an office downstairs since stairs are a big issue. lord knows how she's going to deal with the 3 sets of stairs in our townhouse.

aly had her first swimming lesson on wednesday which went very well. her being an extrovert has certain advantages and certain disadvantages. in situations like this, it is definitely an advantage. while other parents were getting soaked by clinging, screaming children, aly was off having the time of her life blowing bubbles, filling her ears with water, singing songs etc. she's not a very good listener at the best of times so the teacher had to drag her back to the group a few times but since there are only 6 children to a class, it wasn't too much of a problem. ideally for me, there is also a glass viewing room next to the pool where the parents can watch, so i was able to contain toby in there with his handy dandy notebook and matchbox cars which took his mind off the fact he was missing out on the fun in the pool.

well sascha left this morning and is enjoying the peace of his san francisco hotel room. we've had a very exciting day with aly's first ice skating lesson which went very well [although she refused to go anywhere until she had a hockey stick in her hand. like father like daughter]. later, after we'd left her at preschool, toby and i found a lovely park behind her school which i didn't know existed. toby spotted some berries on a tree and thought they were baby apples.

not too much to report. toby is getting pretty good at his colours - he knows blue and white, kind of knows green and yellow but, just like aly when she was his age, refuses to acknowledge the existence of red[?!]

pete came to stay with us on wednesday night and we all went out bowling on thursday. it was good to see him since we hadn't seen him since last christmas and aly has been asking about him every week since. aly and toby were both extremely happy to see him. the bowling was a little tricky since they only had 10 pin-lanes available, so the children couldn't lift their balls, but they did ok with rolling them. maybe we should wait a year or 2 for any more 10-pin. pete's now in victoria but will stay with us the night before his flight to japan which will be great since sascha's away all week.

aly: mommy, i love my uncle peter. he has a black shirt. sometimes i don't like black.

toby's latest word is 'baboo' which apparently means paper. his pronunciations are usually pretty accurate so i don't quite know what went wrong but baboo it is.

september 10th

aly had her 1st day at preschool this week. nobody is quite sure what she thinks of it all since she refuses to tell anyone about it. i stayed with her on her first day and when i arrived to pick her up on her second day she ran to give me a hug and shouted 'oh mommy, i lost you' but then proceeded to run around in circles and wouldn't leave to come home so i'm taking that as a good sign!

latest crazy aly quote [the other day in the car]:
my feet are bad guys mommy and daddy, but it's ok because my hands are the good guys and they're going to rescue my hair.

toby had a great birthday in victoria. his favourite present was his blue's clues handy dandy notebook chosen by his sister.

caught!

caught! - toby very quietly sneaked off to the kitchen while no one was looking and helped himself to his cake [he's still wearing his bib from his first portion of cake!]

anyone looking for an update on kellie and her broken pelvis, here it is....she's just about managing to take her first wobbly steps and has come off most of her painkillers. all her bumps and bruises are healing well. she's got a doctors appointment on friday where she should find out whether she can get back to work in the next week or two. she's completely stare crazy so feel free to email me with any messages and i'll forward them to her.

september 1st

well, we had a lovely day at the pne [pacific national exhibition] in vancouver last week and miraculously i already have the photos up

the richmond family place is closed this week so i don't know how sascha's going to get any work done with the 3 of us mopping around the place. i'll have to reinvestigate richmond for more inspiring things to do.

aly starts school in a week's time. i'm not sure how i feel about it. it's only 2 mornings a week but STILL.. SCHOOL. she's so big. they'll be at college before i know it!

for each of aly and toby's birthdays over the past 2 years i've noted down some things about each of them - favourite tv shows, toys etc. and, to celebrate toby's birthday, have put them all online in the parenting section of the site.

blog comment of the month:
i definitely think 'silk' is the best brand of soy milk.
